Patrick Garcia is all smiles as he carried his son Alex Jazz while former girlfriend Jennylyn Mercado, the kid’s mom, looked on.
This is one moment showbiz scribes like me always want to witness in this zany world—the fiercest wars among ex-lovers can actually end, allowing such protagonists to look beyond the hurt and the pride and focus on what really matters–having the innocent prevail. AJ is surely one innocent protagonist, an unwitting victim to all the verbal tirades, heated exchanges that went on and on through the years, since Patrick and Jen’s ugly split.
But thanks to a more mature outlook, forgiving heart, Jen’s newfound love (a guy named Dennis Trillo), and maybe a “career realization,” AJ now has a father to look up to.
It wasn’t too long ago when showbiz talk shows featured Jen and Patrick, including their relatives, at loggerheads over AJ (visitation rights, infant milk purchases). Jen even came to a point in emphasizing and insisting that AJ does not have a father (leading to speculation about a scientific or religious miracle). Patrick even took a very long break from show biz, just to avoid the continuing controversy that put a screeching halt to a once illustrious career.
Their families were not spared from the intrigues, as the media also placed them in the spotlight, adding fuel to an already raging fire.
Observers to this much hyped spat, or a lover’s quarrel turned bad, only looked forward to seeing the day when both parties could eventually reconcile.
Patrick’s mom, Bing, summed it up perfectly: “Time heals all wounds.”
And, at the first birthday party of Patrick’s niece Kendra last June 27, that moment came. Patrick was already at the party venue, the Alabang Country Club, when Jen arrived with AJ. Upon seeing them, Patrick immediately approached Jen and their son at the door and gave AJ his first hug as a father — an emotional moment that drove some to tears.
Days before, Jen had already expressed her willingness to have Patrick visit their son. She admitted that Dennis was a big factor. In an interview with GMA 7’s Startalk, she said, “Yes, isa siya sa mga nag-convince. At isa siya sa nag-influence sa akin na, ‘Bakit hindi, bakit hindi mo ipahiram?’ At saka, maganda rin yung wala akong naipapakitang masama. Masaya lahat. Okey lahat. Masarap yung pakiramdam na okey lahat, walang samaan ng loob.”
And, as fate would have it, Jen had a chance meeting with Patrick’s sister, Cheska, wherein AJ and Kendra also met. During this encounter, Cheska invited Jen to the party.
Jen told Startalk that this was the first time she saw Patrick in three years, and that she only communicates with Cheska through text messages. During these conversations, she said Patrick had always asked how she and AJ were. “Kinakamusta niya palagi si Jazz. Do’n nag-start yung communication.”
Jen said that despite all the problems she and Patrick faced, she was happy that this moment came. “Happy ako na finally, nagkita na ang dalawa. I’m sure, yun na rin yung pinakahihintay ng family nila. Kami rin, gusto naman namin na magkita yung mag-ama.”
And of course, it resulted in renewing and “restarting” their lines of communication—leading to more visits from Patrick and hopefully bonding moments with his son. Kahit papaano, nakakapag-text. Nakakapag-communicate kami. Okey na ‘ko. Kumpleto na rin. Kahit paano, wala na akong itinatago. Hindi ko na kailangang itago si Jazz.”
